“Oprah Winfrey Show” aired a program entitled “dangerous food” on April 16, 1996. Their topic includes Bovine Spongiform, Encephalopathy (BSE) which is also known as “Mad Cow Disease.” They say that “Mad Cow Disease” comes from Europe and United States has no evidence that they are affected by “Mad Cow Disease.” The conversation goes to how the corporation feed their cattle to produce quality meat and milk. They say that they feed cattle to other cattle to produce quality meat and milk which is also a good way to spread BSE.

Oprah made a statement on April 17, 1996 stating that she will not eat hamburgers because of the fear of mad cow disease. She said that she was afraid since her guest, Howard Lyman, said that they feed cattle to other cattle. This makes a panic in United States and the beef industry begins to drop.

This event explains that Oprah Winfrey is very popular and influential person and her show “Oprah Winfrey Show” is being patronized by American. Almost everything she said were believed by people. The information given by the show is very destructive to the beef industry and it demotes their products. It results to the decline of beef industry in United States. This is why beef industry filed a lawsuit against Oprah Winfrey for her statement because her word is too powerful that it can easily affect their businesses.

In the end, United States District Court investigates if there are any cases of Bovine Spongiform, Encephalopathy (BSE) in United States. It proven that there is no cases of Bovine Spongiform, Encephalopathy (BSE) and beef is very safe in the country.

Also, the method of feeding cattle to cattle is banned in United States to avoid the spread of mad cow disease in the country.
